The oldest standing and operating lighthouse in the Americas!
Two petitions from the Nova Scotia Lighthouse Preservation Society -- with over 5,000 signatures -- were presented to the House of Commons in December. The petitions are calling for federal funding and parliamentary leadership in developing a strategy to preserve the iconic Sambro Island Lighthouse.
This message is in keeping with the National Trust's recommendations to the House of Commons Standing Committee on Finance -- Pre-Budget Consultations 2013, which states:
"We recommend providing seed money for a national campaign to raise funds for local groups and communities working to preserve the over 450 historic lighthouses that are in the process of being transferred out of federal government ownership. We also recommend federal matching funds be provided to build on the private and corporate donations generated by the campaign."
