National Trust Announces Recipients of the Prince of Wales Prize, the Gabrielle Léger Medal and the Lieutenant Governor’s Award

Hamilton, ON, October 19, 2016 – Natalie Bull, Executive Director of the National Trust for Canada, today announced the recipients of the organization’s National Leadership Awards for outstanding contributions in the field of heritage conservation: the Price of Wales Prize, the Gabrielle Léger Medal, and the Lieutenant Governor’s Award.

In keeping with his commitment to architecture, the environment, and inner-city renewal, His Royal Highness agreed to lend his title to the creation of the Prince of Wales Prize to be awarded annually to the government of a municipality that has demonstrated a strong and sustained commitment to the conservation of its historic places. 

This year the City of Richmond, British Columbia will receive the Prince of Wales Prize in recognition of its long history of celebrating and protecting its heritage assets, and an approach to heritage conservation described by jury as “holistic” and “forward-looking.” 

The Leadership Awards also recognize individual excellence.  Mr. Thomas H.B. Symons of Peterborough is the recipient of the Gabrielle Léger Medal for Lifetime Achievement in recognition of some 60 years of service to Canada across many disciplines including education, human rights, social justice, language rights and international affairs, and his profound contribution to heritage conservation.

Mr. Harry Barrett of Oakville, Ontario is the recipient of the Lieutenant Governor’s Award for heritage conservation at the provincial level for his tireless efforts in preserving and promoting the heritage of Ontario, in particular Oakville’s cultural, natural and built heritage over the past sixty years.

The awards will be presented will be presented by the Hon. Elizabeth Dowdeswell, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, on October 22, 2016 at the Scottish Rite Club in Hamilton during a ceremony held as part of the National Trust’s Annual Conference.
