Heritage Canada Foundation Mourns the Passing of Peter John Stokes

Heritage Canada Foundation (HCF) mourns the loss of Peter John Stokes, a pioneer in the field of architectural conservation and an early recipient of HCF’s Gabrielle Léger Medal for Lifetime Achievement in Heritage Conservation. One of the founding members of the Association for Preservation Technology International and author of several seminal works on Ontario architecture, Peter John Stokes helped shape heritage conservation as a practitioner, advocate, volunteer and teacher.

The first recipient of the Eric Arthur Lifetime Achievement Award from the Architectural Conservancy of Ontario (ACO), Peter John Stokes began his career as a restoration architect with Upper Canada Village in 1955, going on to work extensively in his adopted hometown of Niagara-on-the-Lake but also throughout Ontario and Eastern Canada. When the Ontario Heritage Act passed in 1975, many communities sought his thoughtful advice. Some of his numerous commissions include the Apothecary in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Victoria Hall in Cobourg, the Grange in Toronto, and the Carleton County Courthouse in Woodstock, New Brunswick. He combined a professional rigour and love of historic places with a gentle and generous manner, and will be sorely missed.
