How does it work?
Municipalities normally charge fees to property owners to obtain permits for a wide variety of planning-related and other municipal services. Waiving or refunding municipal fees for owners of designated heritage properties is one of the ways in which municipalities can encourage property owners to have their properties designated.
Examples of waiver of fees:
- Saskatoon (Saskatchewan) – Under the city’s Heritage Conservation Program, owners of designated heritage properties receive a refund of municipal fees.
- Whitehorse (Yukon)– Under a city bylaw passed in 2002, owners of designated heritage resources are exempt from landfill tipping fees, development permit fees, building permit fees and zoning amendment fees
