Sir Sanford Fleming House
2549-2555 Brunswick St.
Halifax, Nova Scotia
Fleming House is a one-and-a-half Gothic Revival style residence named after the prominent Haligonian Sir Sanford Fleming who resided there from 1866 to 1873. Fleming was a major figure in the construction of the Intercolonial Railway linking Halifax and Quebec and the Canadian Pacific Railway, which were instrumental in the formation of Canada. Fleming was also largely responsible for the establishment of standard time zones around the world.
The National Trust for Canada took possession of the house due to foreclosure in 1978, and held the property in protective custody and ensuring its listing as a Municipally Registered Heritage Property in 1981, and transferred ownership on April 14, 1983. Sir Sandford Fleming House is part of Sir Sandford Fleming Park or “Dingle Park.”
