Heartz-O'Halloran Row
(76-88 Great George Street), Charlottown, Prince Edward Island
The restoration of this row housing helped kick-start historic preservation in Charlottetown. In 1975, the National Trust for Canada bought the building for $147,000 and proceeded to spend $460,000 on renovations. The aim was to demonstrate the importance of preservation and how it could be done. Before the National Trust would start work, it insisted that City develop heritage bylaws - another important result of the renovation. The National Trust sold building in 1983. The entire length of Great George Street is now a National Historic Site.
