HCF Congratulates Former Board Member Herb Stovel on receiving the ICCROM Award

Ottawa, ON – November 30, 2011 – The Heritage Canada Foundation (HCF) congratulates Prof. Herb Stovel on receiving the 2011 ICCROM Award in recognition of special merit in the field of conservation, protection and restoration of cultural heritage, and for making an important contribution to ICCROM (International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property).

Prof. Stovel’s many accomplishments both inside and outside ICCROM were noted during the award presentation which highlighted his renowned expertise in cultural heritage conservation and his contribution to several standard-setting principles and texts that now guide professionals in the field.

His special combination of “intellectual curiosity and rigour,” which led to his significant advances in heritage conservation theory and extensive field investigations at the international level, was cited as particularly worthy of recognition.

From 1998-2004 he was director of the ICCROM Heritage Settlements Unit, where he was responsible for the Integrated Territorial and Urban Conservation Program and Living Heritage Program. “International recognition is well warranted for the influential role that Prof. Stovel has played in the field of heritage conservation, not just abroad, but in Canada as well,” remarked HCF’s executive director Natalie Bull. His relationship with HCF has been extensive over the years. He was director of education for the Main Street Canada program (1984-86), director of education for the foundation (1986-88) and a member of its board of directors (2007-2008).

He remains an active participant in HCF’s National Roundtable on Heritage Education. Prof. Stovel has also led the Masters program in Heritage Conservation at Carleton University’s School of Canadian Studies in Ottawa since 2004. The award was presented to Herb Stovel’s wife, Meryl Oliver, on November 18 in Rome.
