Ottawa, ON, December 20, 2012 – Heritage Canada Foundation (HCF) is pleased to announce that it will provide a grant of close to $30,000 to the Friends of Point Prim Society toward the maintenance and repair of the Point Prim Lighthouse.
The Friends of Point Prim Society successfully applied for grant assistance from the Heritage Canada Foundation’s Lighthouse Preservation Assistance funding, part of the Runciman Fund for Heritage Conservation. Funds are available to support historic lighthouses along Nova Scotia’s Fundy shore, in the counties of Digby, Annapolis and Kings. Eligible individuals and community groups are encouraged to apply. For more information, see the Terms and Conditions.
The Friends of Point Prim Society was incorporated in 2010 to oversee improvements to the overall visitor experience at one of the most significant properties on the Bay of Fundy coast. The Point Prim Lighthouse stands watch over the entrance to the Digby Gut and the historic Annapolis Basin.
“With over 500 lighthouses declared surplus by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, HCF is pleased to be able to contribute to those organizations and groups willing to acquire and invest in their communities’ historic lighthouses to help sustain them over the long term,” said executive director Natalie Bull.
The Point Prim Lighthouse Project will focus on two key areas: the design and development of parking, a site access trail, limited mobility trails and professional landscaping; and the repair of the concrete tower, including the replacement of damaged and inappropriate vinyl siding with cedar shingles.
Donors who would like to contribute to the Runciman Fund for Heritage Conservation or help create additional lighthouse preservation funds are encouraged to contact the Heritage Canada Foundation.
