Heritage Canada Foundation Announces Recipients of the Prince of Wales Prize,
and the Gabrielle Léger and Lieutenant Governor’s Awards
Ottawa, ON October 9, 2012 – The Heritage Canada Foundation today announced the City of Saguenay, Quebec, as the recipient of its most prestigious award, the Prince of Wales Prize for Municipal Heritage Leadership.
His Royal Highness, The Prince of Wales whose commitment to architecture, the environment, and inner-city renewal is well known, agreed to lend his title to the creation of a prize to be awarded annually to the government of a municipality that has demonstrated a strong and sustained commitment to the conservation of its historic places.
The jury selected the City of Saguenay in recognition of its dedication to protecting the architectural and urban landscape of Arvida, a unique pre-planned model industrial town dating to the 1920s (now a district of the larger amalgamated municipality), and commitment to revitalizing the area through the preservation of its heritage.
This year’s HCF awards recognizing individual excellence will be presented to: Mr. Jim Bezanson of Saint John, New Brunswick, winner of the Gabrielle Léger Award for Lifetime Achievement in Heritage Conservation in recognition of tremendous dedication to the field of heritage conservation in Canada and Ms. Francine Lelièvre of Montreal, Quebec, recipient of the Lieutenant Governor’s Award for Outstanding Achievement in Heritage Conservation at the Provincial Level for her work in preserving history through such cultural and tourism institutions as the Pointe-à-Callière museum, which she founded.
HCF is pleased to announce that The Honourable Pierre Duchesne, Lieutenant Governor of Quebec, will be presenting the 2012 National Awards at a special ceremony and reception in Montreal on October 12, 2012 at St. George’s Anglican Church National Historic Site as part of the National Heritage Summit.
