NATIONAL HERITAGE SUMMIT

Heritage Conservation in Canada: What’s Working? And What Needs to Change?

October 11 – 13, 2012
Fairmont Queen Elizabeth
Montréal, Québec

HCF Annual Conference in cooperation with the Canadian Commission for UNESCO, Canadian Association of Heritage Professionals (CAHP|ACECP), Canadian Forum for Public Research on Heritage, and Canada Research Chair on Built Heritage.

Be There, Pitch In and Take Action!

Read our Discussion Paper on the state of heritage in Canada, "Toward a New Vision for the Heritage Movement: What's Working; What's Not; What Needs to Change" and join us in Montreal as we collectively chart the future of Canada’s heritage conservation sector.

2012 marks the 40th anniversary of the World Heritage Convention, a landmark agreement that set national benchmarks for heritage management. What better time to reflect on how far we’ve come as a movement, where we are now, and determine where we need to go. While economic circumstances and government priorities are changing dramatically, built, cultural and natural heritage is being embraced by increasing numbers of Canadians, many of whom do not self-identify as heritage supporters. The National Heritage Summit is an opportunity to take stock, “hit the reset button,” and set priorities for putting heritage on the local, provincial and national agenda.

To improve our ability to build vibrant communities and protect places that matter, we need to capitalize on our collective strength, and foster stronger working relationships with other sectors and new partners. We must also re-establish the social and economic relevance of heritage conservation for a new era and the next generation.

Summit 2012 will blend elements you’ve come to expect from HCF’s annual national conferences – well-crafted learning sessions, ample networking opportunities and special events, street-level workshops and tours– with working sessions that build a priority action plan for the heritage sector. Get inspired and empowered. Come join this nationally important conversation and explore beautiful, historic Montreal.

Keynote Speakers

Ros Kerslake was appointed Chief Executive of The Prince's Regeneration Trust in 2006. As first Chief Executive of the Trust, which brought all the Prince's heritage activities into one organisation, she has overseen its transformation into the foremost heritage-led regeneration charity in the UK. Prior to joining the Trust she held a number of senior posts in the property world and in industry, including Property Director at Railtrack, CEO of Regenco ( Sandwell Urban Regeneration Company), Director of Business Services at Gulf Oil and a similar role worldwide at Booker Group Plc.

The Prince’s Regeneration Trust works with communities across the UK to rescue and regenerate important historic buildings at risk of decay or demolition. The Trust helps give redundant heritage sites a viable and sustainable new use whilst conserving their historic and architectural significance. The projects stimulate local regeneration and the charity looks to work in socially and economically deprived areas, where the benefit of regeneration will be the greatest.

Dr. Mark Kingwell is one of Canada's foremost public intellectuals and author of sixteen books, including Concrete Reveries: Consciousness and the City, Nearest Thing to Heaven: The Empire State Building and American Dreams, and The World We Want: Restoring Citizenship in a Fractured Age. A contributing editor of Harper's Magazine and a former columnist for Adbusters, the National Post, and the Globe and Mail, his work has been translated into ten languages, and he has lectured to popular and academic audiences around the world. A Professor of Philosophy at the University of Toronto with research interests in social and political theory, as well as the philosophy of art, architecture and design, Dr. Kingwell's work has explored such questions as the role of empathy in creating social change, social obligation and citizenship in a democratic society, and the ethics and politics of the built environment.

Andrew Emond is a Canadian photographer whose work typically explores the built environment and urban infrastructure. Since 2004 he has been examining places that are often deemed off-limits or thought to be overlooked. Past subject matter has included the former hydroelectric power stations of Niagara Falls, the decommissioned asbestos mines of Quebec and the underground storm drainage network in Toronto-- all of which were photographed without seeking permission. While living in Montreal, Emond spent six years covertly exploring the city's sewer system and documented his experiences through the website undermontreal.com. His first book "Elevator Alley", co-created with writer Michael Cook focused on the historical importance of the dormant grain elevators of Buffalo, New York. Emond has lectured at the Canadian Centre for Architecture as well as TED-x Montreal and his photography will be the focus of the forthcoming documentary, Under the City. He currently lives in Toronto with his wife, writer Teri Vlassopoulos.
